The mix ties together hiphop, dubstep, soul and electro synths just like the tracks in it do. Massive beats, to which rave pianos, electro synths, and ghostly, pitched-up divas give a bright neon hue. Matching melodic complexity to forceful rhythms — every beat is matched to a soulful melody. Granted, it’s a particularly wonky kind of soul. The compositions are filtered through the heavy buzzes and oscillating warbles of the post-Joker sound, a thrilling run with a proper full-length of fluid, melodic dubstep that sounds beautiful and aggressive in equal measure.
The sound palette seems taken straight out of a sci-fi soundtrack: fusing vivid colours with tempered drums and moods, he’s equally as able to appease personal musing or excite your limbs with spectacular effect. At the same time, the melodic cut-ups make it sound like dubstep’s version of a ballad. A space opera, with it’s boundary-less, map-scrunching approach and in mood and style, it’s like a telegram from another digital planet.
The melodies reach, reach, reach until you’re nearly ready to dive into the track yourself and push them where they so obviously want to go. The groove is paramount, the instruments locked into a Bolero build that only rarely gets extinguished, only to be built up again. Succeeds in creating glowing bits of soul and then simply letting them run their course. *
